Sustainable Tourism

Kimitoön has been awarded the Green Destinations Platinum Certificate, an international recognition for its long-term work in promoting sustainable tourism. The certificate is not an ending point, but rather a starting point – a promise to continue developing towards even more sustainable and internationally attractive tourism.

Sustainable growth and shared responsibility

The appeal of Kimitoön is based on its unique archipelago nature, authentic local culture, and strong sense of community. This is a place where the sea, the archipelago landscapes, and the people form their own ecosystem – and where tourism is developed in a way that supports local vitality, increases well-being, and causes as little harm as possible to nature and local culture.

In Kimitoön, the development of tourism is based on knowledge, collaboration, and continuous learning. The purpose of tourism is to strengthen the vitality and local economy of the area, but at the same time to protect the archipelago’s unique natural and cultural values.

What does sustainability work mean in practice?

Kimitoön’s sustainability work is reflected in tourism in both large and small pratical actions as well as meaningful choices, which together have a major impact.

Moving forward through collaboration and openness

Successful sustainability work also requires seamless cooperation with local businesses and associations. Kimitoön is a partner of the UNESCO Archipelago Biosphere Reserve to promote sustainable tourism, cultural heritage, and the archipelago’s natural environment.

Kimitoön’s goal is to develop sustainable international tourism that creates vitality and promotes well-being, but leaves as small a footprint as possible. We want to be a place where the growth of tourism supports nature, local life, and the vitality of the community – so that the uniqueness of the archipelago is preserved for future generations.

Developing sustainable tourism experiences, products, and services requires a joint effort from the entire region.

Ethical Principles in Tourism

Kimitoön Municipality is committed to promoting ethical and responsible tourism. The municipality follows the principles of the UN World Tourism Organization’s Global Code of Ethics for Tourism and promotes transparency, equality and human rights. The municipality does not accept exploitation, discrimination or human trafficking in tourism-related activities and encourages tourism businesses and other partners to follow the same principles.
